Course in Firearms and Weapons Safety (Approved for Firearms Licensing in Queensland)


COURSE OVERVIEW

A basic introduction to the firearms industry, the course covers the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes applicable to firearms legislation, firearms in the community, licensing requirements, safe handling, safe storage and transport, as well as additional information which is essential to all shooters.

Category A and B – is undertaken for sports target shooting and club use, hunting on rural land and occupational use. Students wanting to undertake this training must have membership of a gun/pistol club or be part of an association.


Category C - is undertaken for sports target shooting or occupational users (professional shooter, primary producer, fisher or rural employee) or by individuals for clay target club use, and requires a doctors certificate for proof of physical disability (lack of strength and dexterity)


Category D – is undertaken by occupational users (professional shooter, primary producer, fisher or rural employee) and aerial shooters.


Category H – is undertaken by students for pistol club use, these students must be a member of a pistol club. As well as rural employees, professional shooters and primary producers.


Category M (Crossbows) – is undertaken by crossbow club members and those using crossbows to hunt on rural land.


Category M (Miscellaneous Weapons) – is undertaken by students using firearms for historical enactment and theatrical performance and martial arts club members. 

COURSE DELIVERY AND DURATION

This course is delivered face-to-face over 8 hours including a live fire range practice at an approved range. All equipment will be provided and notes provided for referencing once the course is completed. Enclosed shoes need to be worn. Participants are asked to bring lunch.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

In order to participate in this course, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Entrants should be over the age of 18 to complete this training, However, students under 18 years of age, up to 11, can undertrake training to use certain firearms with approved adult supervision under a minors licence. Must have written permission to attend the course
  2. Must not have any physical or other impairment which would prevent you from handling firearms safely – if unsure, seek advice from your GP or contact us to discuss suitability
  3. Must not have any criminal convictions (relating to drug use, violence or weapons) in the past five years
  4. Must not have been a subject to a domestic violence order in the past five years
  5. Must not have been a subject to an involuntary mental health order in the past five years

COURSE OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for NAT11029 Course in Firearms Safety (Approved for Firearms Licensing in Queensland).

This course meets the training requirements to apply for a QLD Weapons Licence for the particular categories selected. Certificates will be posted within one week of course completion.
